It is said that instead of testing someone's IQ, if a vocabulary test is given, it will provide a better understanding of an individual's intelligence. Since, the more words you know, the more knowledge you possess. So, instead of limiting your knowledge of words to a certain field, if you were to learn a variety of words from across fields, it will provide you a better understanding of knowledge as a whole.
What if you learnt that Television (a word you are familiar with) is made up of two roots, Tele- and -vision. Tele meaning distant and vision meaning images, therefore, an instrument through which you can see images from a distance is called a television. Scope means to see. Ergo, telescope means an instrument through which you can see things at a distance. See how much fun learning can be? What do you think the roots of Telephone are?
Apart from knowing the words, if we end up pronouncing it incorrectly, it beats the purpose of communicating. So, the pronunciation and intonation is an integral part of learning a new language. The way the course has been planned is like a casual stroll through a meadow rather than a steep climb up-hill. Learning should be fun, not painful!
